A biotechnology company using animal tissue to repair human heart valves, hernias and tendons claims Australia is missing out on a lucrative market for tissue engineered from kangaroos because the native animals cannot be farmed here.
Perth-based bioMD has developed a new way to treat and sterilise tissue from pigs and cows to help rebuild diseased human tissue but says the star performer in its research has been kangaroo tissue because it is thinner, stronger and more adaptable.
Managing director Michael Bennett said yesterday that kangaroo heart valves and tissue and jugular veins showed great promise for use in human heart repairs while the animal's tail tendons could be used in orthopaedic surgery.
